The inspiration for Wonder Around the World has come during a particularly stressful time. The pandemic arrived last spring and I unexpectedly lost my job like millions of others around the globe. To keep my sanity and to challenge myself, I decided to study for the Florida Bar exam. I have a law degree but never practiced law (but that’s a conversation for another day)…
As I began studying the constitutional law section of my bar review course, I was reminded of what a remarkable system our founding fathers came up with for my country, the United States of America. Whether one is happy with the current state of affairs or not, I am in awe of the government that was set up and remains today.
Again, this is a stressful time here in the USA and around the world. I began revisiting a book I have owned for quite some time: Rhonda Byrne’s The Secret the Power. The entire premise can be broken down into three words: focus on love. I thought to myself, “what if we focused on what we love about our country instead of bashing the folks on the other side of the political aisle”? Wouldn’t it be fun to do a new podcast about what we love about our country (instead of all of the negativity that permeates the media these days)?
Let’s make it even more interesting… instead of just talking to my fellow Americans, why not talk to people from around the world? I know I would love to hear about their countries and cultures. What do they love about their country? What would they change if they were in charge? If I were to visit their country for the first time, what would they recommend for me? What should I see, do, eat? What should I avoid?
This new platform is based on these eight beliefs:
- I believe in the power of love.
- I believe in keeping an open mind.
- I believe in actively listening and seeking to understand.
- I believe that the world is a wonderful place. It just depends on what we focus on and keeping a certain perspective.
- I believe in learning and always growing.
- I believe there is no greater classroom than to travel (and these days if we can’t physically travel, let us do some armchair travelling together).
- I believe we need each other.
- I believe that together, we can heal the world.
A final prong of why I am inspired to start this new platform now, is a book I recently had picked up at my local library, Rick Warren’s What On Earth Am I Here For?. In one weekend, I read all 338 pages. I could not put it down and the book was written and organized in a way to be a daily reading for 42 days. Ha!
As I mentioned earlier, I was unexpectedly laid off from my job, which led me to study for the bar exam… I am a bit at a crossroads right now in terms of my career and working on reinventing the next chapter of my life (which I suspect many of us are doing right now).
I have to say, at age 53 (turning 54 in 24 days but who is counting)? lol 😉 – this, if I let it be, can be a somewhat daunting prospect. I have been doing my best to take care of myself and keep a positive attitude. I liked the message in Rick Warren’s book that I am here to serve God and I am open to God’s plan for me. It’s all still a work in progress but I do know I have the ability to write and facilitate conversations (podcasting is a wonderful medium and I thoroughly enjoyed my two years of hosting my show, Courageously Go)!
We will see where this new adventure leads us. I am thankful to have this inspiration and creative energy. I believe God wants me to use my talents, abilities, and passions to serve the world.
Thank you God and thank you to all of you for being here. May we continue to be blessed and learn from each other. May we never stop listening or being curious. Let us enjoy this adventure of appreciating what we have in our own backyards while we get the delightful opportunity to learn about other places in the world.
Keep Wondering and Growing my friends!
